A little early for All Souls Day...

I'm stealing this very lovely picture from Another Monkey, but I hope he doesn't mind. It just reminded me of a standing, annual joke my mother used to make. Every year when someone would remark about the last rose of summer, she would start singing the song, but she only knew the first line. Then she would ask "Do you know that song?" and laugh. I guess it's one of those family jokes you had to be there for, but seeing that picture made me all weepy for her this morning. Five years after her death and I can still hear her laughing.

I guess that's a good thing. Most of the time when I think of her, I laugh. That was her one great gift to me -- a sense of humor. The woman was genuinely the funniest person I've ever known. One of the times I visited her in the nursing home, the lady across the hall said to me, "Your mother is always walking these halls and coming up with the funniest things. I said to her one day 'Anna, who writes your material?'"

That was my mama.

Tis the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone,
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone.
No flow'r of her kindred
No rosebud is nigh
To reflect back her blushes,
Or give sigh for sigh.

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one,
To pine on the stem,
Since the lovely are sleeping,
Go, sleep thou with them
Thus kindly I'll scatter
Thy leaves o'er the bed,
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie scentless and dead.

So soon may I follow
When friendships decay;
And from love's shining circle
The gems drop away
When true hearts lie wither'd
And fond ones are flow'n
Oh! Who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?

Damn.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone.

Hear us roar.

Believe!!!

Kenny Rogers, when asked where his resolve came from:

"Well, Maybe from failing so much," he replied. "And, you know, I'm not afraid to fail. Maybe I've proven that by going out there and failing enough. But I'm still here for a reason. That's because I like the challenge. I know I'm 40-something and don't have a whole lot of talent anyways, but I do believe in myself when I get out there, and I believe I can make pitches."

And RIP, Buck O'Neil.

Be Careful What You Wish For Department

Tomorrow, October 7, at 4:30 PM EDT, the planets will align in a formation never before seen in the history of the cosmos. The Tigers host the Yankees at Comerica Park, and Michigan State comes to the Big House to play Michigan. Thank Lobster for the remote control.

And though the prospect of these games excites me, I still shake my head at the starting time for both of them. There are day games and there are night games, but this late-afternoon-just-to-fit-it-into-a-television-schedule stuff is a crock.

Yet another reason to root for a Tigers - Cardinals series. No coasts!!!!

Bittersweet

Way back in April, nobody NOBODY expected the Tigers to finish any higher than 4th in the division. So I'm ashamed of myself for being disappointed in the wild card spot. But jeebus --losing three to Kansas City? This does not bode well for the playoffs.

Be that as it may, it's been a remarkable summer for the folks around Detroit. Generations of children in southeast Michigan had never experienced a pennant race. And damn, this was fun.

Yeah, they sucked since the middle of August. But hopeless romantic that I am, I'm hoping for a Detroit - St. Louis series, not only to stick it to Fox Sports, but more importantly to resurrect this little ditty from 1968. Everybody sing!

Tigers, Tigers, rah, rah, rah.
Cardinals, Cardinals, boo, boo, boo
Tigers, Tigers, rah, rah, rah
Cardinals, Cardinals, boo
Tigers, Tigers, rah, rah, rah,
Cardinals, Cardinals, boo
Tigers, Tigers, rah, rah, rah
Cardinals, Cardinals, boo.
